E-learning and the virtual transformation of histopathology teaching during COVID-19: its impact on student learning experience and outcome

The transformation of teaching methods during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic improved student engagement without any adverse effects on student learning outcomes in histology and pathology education.

Medical students’ learning outcomes and experience in multidisciplinary practical exam prior to and during COVID-19

Interpretation of gross specimens is essential for students in pathology and anatomy examinations. Slice images were used during online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. Student performance wasn't impacted by the change from an in-person to an online practical exam.

Since the development of digital whole slide (virtual slide) technology in the early 2000s, their translation into teaching, research and the clinic has involved comparison of whole slide images and traditional glass slides. Learning pathology using collaborative vs. individual annotation of whole slide images: a mixed methods trial

Collaborative annotation improves understanding of microscopic morphology for students with sufficient background understanding of the discipline. These findings have implications for the deployment of annotation activities in biomedical curricula, and potentially for postgraduate training in Anatomical Pathology.

Enhancing the student experience via collaborative learning

Implemented collaborative exercises in supervised and supported classroom sessions. Used digital annotation of images on Slice including microscopic sections, gross anatomy and clinical imaging. Feedback suggested that such activities enable students to learn from one another as well as from the instructors.

Learning gains using virtual slides and online learning resources are reported to be at least equivalent to and in some cases superior when compared to studying with textbooks and glass slide teaching sets.
